Scuba diving in Koh Lanta in low season

We've been traveling nonstop now for over seven months, including some spectacular dive locations. For several reasons (cost being the biggest one) I've not taken a chance to do some scuba diving.

While in Koh Lanta, I finally decided to flex my scuba muscles. Since it was low season, finding an operator was a bit difficult. As it turns out another guest at the hotel approached me to go out as he needed more divers to fill a boat. We were to head out the next morning at 8am.

I quickly found out why it is low season. There was some rain in the morning so our departure was delayed. 45 minutes later it was still drizzling, but the captain thought it would burn off quickly so we all loaded up. As soon as we hit the open waters, the waves picked up and our little speed boat was getting tossed around pretty bad. I was reminded of the crab fishing boats on Deadliest Catch.

The operator decided to turn back in. Unfortunately the skies were blue an hour later!

Determined now, I hooked up with another operator a couple days later. The weather was perfect and the ride to the site (Ko Ha) uneventful.

Ko Ha is a series of 5 islands that form a small lagoon. We dove Ko Ha # 2 & 4 on the first dive and # 1 on the second dive. Visibility was pretty good and there was a lot of wildlife to see.  Diving in Koh Lanta in the low season is a must.  It's not the best diving in the world, but still pretty amazing!

Anyone have a favorite place to dive in Southeast Asia?

  1. When were you guys in Ko Lanta? It works well into our schedule to go in September, but I keep being worried about the weather! We have 5 young kids and although we don't mind having some storms, we still want to be able to use the water since we are on an island after all! I'd love to now when you were there so I can get a better feel of how it was for you!
